## Key takeaways

- Discovery day is a two-way assessment — the franchisor is evaluating you as well.
- Arrive having already read the FDD, so your questions are specific rather than introductory.
- Ask to meet the people who will actually support you after opening, not only the development team.
- Use the day to test the answers you already got from franchisees on validation calls.
- Feeling rushed toward a signature on the day is itself information.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a franchise discovery day?

Discovery day is a visit, usually to the franchisor's head office, where a prospective franchisee meets the leadership team, sees the operation and works through the model in detail. It normally comes late in the process, after the Franchise Disclosure Document has been received. Both sides use it to decide whether to proceed.

### How should I prepare for discovery day?

Read the FDD first, particularly Items 6, 7, 19 and 20, and complete several validation calls with current and former franchisees. Bring specific questions drawn from those documents and conversations. Arriving without having read the disclosure wastes the one day you get direct access to the people running the system.

### What questions should I ask at discovery day?

Ask who supports you after opening and how often, what the first twelve months typically look like financially, why franchisees left in the past three years, what the franchisor does when a unit underperforms, and which parts of the model are changing. Ask to meet the operations and training staff, not just development.

### Does attending discovery day commit me to buying?

No. Discovery day carries no obligation, and the FTC Franchise Rule still requires at least 14 calendar days between receiving the FDD and signing or paying anything. If the day is structured to end with a signature, that pressure is worth noting and is a reasonable reason to slow down.
