## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find the right franchise business for sale?

Start from your own constraints rather than a brand list. Decide what you can invest without draining your household reserve, how much of the week you can give the business, and whether you want to run it yourself or manage a team. Then filter by industry, investment level and location and compare what is left on the same terms: total investment, ongoing fees, unit counts and the quality of the financial disclosure. A shortlist built that way is usually short. That is the point — it is easier to validate five opportunities properly than to skim fifty.

### How much does it cost to buy a franchise?

The franchise fee is only the entry ticket. A realistic budget has four layers: the fee and deposits, the build-out and launch costs, working capital to operate through a slow ramp-up, and the ongoing royalties, advertising contributions and technology fees that continue for the life of the agreement. Investment ranges across the brands listed here run from under $50,000 for home-based and mobile models to several million for multi-unit food and hospitality. Item 7 of the Franchise Disclosure Document is where the franchisor states its own estimate — check it against local quotes and what recent franchisees actually spent.

### What should I compare between franchise opportunities?

Four things decide the experience more than the brand does: the job you are actually buying, whether one unit can work in your market, whether the franchisor delivers the support the model needs, and what you remain responsible for if you need to exit. Every brand page here shows the same fields — investment range, royalty and marketing fees, contract term, unit counts and growth, and whether the franchisor publishes Item 19 financial performance data — so the comparison stays consistent instead of following each brand's own framing.

### Are low-cost franchises a good investment?

A lower entry cost can make ownership possible without real estate or heavy inventory, and home-based, mobile and service models often open sooner. But affordability is about the whole plan, not the advertised price: a cheap franchise stops being affordable when the owner's weekly role clashes with your skills or schedule, or when the working capital runs out before sales build. Compare the fee load against what the system actually provides. A lower fee with limited support can suit an experienced operator, while a first-time owner often gets more value from a clearer system.

### Do I need industry experience to own a franchise?

Most franchisors train for the operating system rather than the trade, and many actively prefer candidates from management, sales or operations backgrounds over industry veterans with established habits. What matters more is whether you can follow a defined process, hire and keep staff, and develop local demand. Requirements do vary — some healthcare, automotive and childcare concepts require licensing or a qualified manager. The disclosure document and a conversation with current franchisees will tell you which applies.

### How does Franchise Grade rate franchise opportunities?

We analyze franchise disclosure data across more than 3,000 systems each year: system growth, franchisee turnover, fee structures, investment ranges and how transparently a franchisor reports financial performance. Those inputs produce a grade you can use to compare brands on evidence rather than marketing. A grade is a starting point, not a verdict. It narrows the field so the slower work — reading the FDD, speaking with current and former owners, and testing the numbers against your own market — goes into the opportunities that deserve it.
